There’s always some form of excitement and energy, anticipation and expectation when doing something for the first time. The first date, job interview, performance, speech, article…
The cocktail of emotions experienced, at these moments, heighten our sense of awareness thus affecting our immediate performance. The outcome of these experiments, whether good or bad, seem to determine our subsequent sense of ‘worth’ and ‘purpose’.
Guilt, shame or feelings of inadequacy may follow a bad performance. I would basically give in to pressure and denounce future forays into such territory — ever!
I will be brimming with confidence, enthusiasm and pride after a successful ‘first’.
I am learning how to find emotional balance regardless of my performance. Whether things go as expected (really good) or awry; my sense of worth will remain intact. I am not my successes or failures; I am my habits.
This has freed me from the need for ‘perfection’ in first attempts at anything. I seek to enjoy the process; to grow, to fall and to rise again.
This is my first article (hopefully not my last). I am making it a daily habit — I am sticking to it.
Here’s to firsts that last.
